My focus and approach to Kali training is to focus on the fundamentals. Over the last ten years of constant training and refining my own practice the one thing that has always stayed the same is the attention on repetition and refinement of core skills. Its important to me that there is a division between the art of Kali and practice of traditional forms and techniques and the application of Kali as a functional and effective real world fighting system. The link between these two methodologies are the fundementals/ basic movements
SELF DEFENCE TRAINING
Matthew has been studying and practicing self defence since childhood. Growing up in Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia self defence or self protection have always been part of his mindset and lifestyle. His own approach to teaching self defence is focused on a 2 pronged approach with classes and courses focusing not just on fighting but also on theory. He teaches self awearnes, situational awearness, development of an offensive mindset and fighting techiniques and self defnece conditioning eg: how to run away from an attacker if your evreyday cloths and shoes?? Self defence training with Matthew usually takes the form of an open and candid discussion where participants are actively asked to comment or question techniques in order to promote an atmosphere of openness and dialogue. Participants are asked to share their expericenes and those can be addressed in the class. Its important for Matthew that people come to learn but also to have their questions answered and to explore as he feels based on hs years of experice tht there is rarely only one way to do things and that self defece and fighting are fluid and can vary from person to person based on age, physical condition, mindset and lifestyle.
KALI FITNESS / MOVEMENT / CONDITIONING
Kali fitness as a concept is exactly what it sounds like. Movement, balance, coordination, stamina and strength play a key role in your ability to fight. My approach combines elements from traditional kali training and mixes it with other fitness and fighting based exercise and movement. The main goal is the development of an overall daily training regiment that should be easy to follow, has a foundation in functionality and which will supplement your kali training and increase your coordination, speed, stamina, balance and strengh.
SPECIAL TRAINING PROGRAMS
Special training programs are those that I develop for specific groups and individuals. Tailor made workshops can be developed based on specific needs such as type of job/ working environment or for people with impeard movement.
