Here is where I tell you a bit about where I'm from, what I do and what I believe in. I live in Belgium but I was born in Africa to a Guyanese mother and and English father. I spent my childhood moving, traveling and exploring. I've been really lucky and had the opportunity to have lived in Africa, Europe and South East Asia.
Martial Arts and fighting sports have been part of my life for as long as I can remember and have shaped, moulded, supported and changed my life in many ways. I discovered Kali and Filipino Martial Arts when I was living in London in my early 20's but I had to wait almost 5 years before moving to Belgium to start training this Unique and esoteric Martial Art.
I was hooked from day 1. It would be fair to say that Kali has been somwthing of an obsession as I have continued to train and grow, exploring and learning diferent styles and working hard to attain my instructor level certification in my chosen system which is Pekiti Tirsia Kali. What started out as a hobby has grown in to a full time job teaching groups, private individuals and professionals in Law Enforcement, Military and security services. I am currently the head instructor for kali at the Fight Off training center in Wavre Belgium and the Pekiti Tirsia Tactical Association Director for Belgium. I give regular weekly classes as well as personal/ private training tailor made for individuals. My personal training practice is centred around both martial arts training and fitness and conditioning focusing on both the combative and the holistic and wellbeing attributes of a martial arts/ fitness lifestyle and the promotion of healthy living and adopting real lifestyle changes to help people reach their goals.
My approach to teaching and personal training is based on tailoring training sessions to the individual and keeping them interested and creating variety. I look for individuals strengths and weaknesses and try to apply a positive, solutions orientated approach to building confidence and ability whether the goal is weight loss, attribute development, fighting conditioning or just learning a new skill with a very strong emphasis on development of fundemental movements and techniques.
FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS/ KALI TRAINING
My focus and approach to Kali training is to focus on the fundamentals. Over the last ten years of constant training and refining my own practice the one thing that has always stayed the same is the attention on repetition and refinement of core skills. Its important to me that there is a division between the art of Kali and practice of traditional forms and techniques and the application of Kali as a functional and effective real world fighting system. The link between these two methodologies are the fundementals/ basic movements Matthew has studied several different Filipino marital arts and is a qualified instructor in Pekiti Tirsia Kali, a close quarter fighting system from the Philipines that focuses on armed and unarmed fighting. He holds the rank of Guro in the Pekiti Tirsia Tactical Association under Jared Wihongi. Matthew is also a level 1 instructor in Jared Wihongi's TRICOM (Triangle Combatives) system which is tailored to law enforcement, security and professionals seeking an effective comabtive and defensive system. Matthew Conducts regular weekly classes as well as a full program of private/ personal training for those wishing to progress quickly or tailor their training to focus on specific ares such as classical kali, cognitive kali to help with movement, balance and conditioning and tactical material from the the PTTA and TRICOM curriculums.
SELF DEFENCE TRAINING
Matthew has been studying and practicing self defence since childhood. Growing up in Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia self defence or self protection have always been part of his mindset and lifestyle. His own approach to teaching self defence is focused on a 2 pronged approach with classes and courses focusing not just on fighting but also on theory. He teaches self awearnes, situational awearness, development of an offensive mindset and fighting techiniques and self defnece conditioning eg: how to run away from an attacker if your evreyday cloths and shoes?? Self defence training with Matthew usually takes the form of an open and candid discussion where participants are actively asked to comment or question techniques in order to promote an atmosphere of openness and dialogue. Participants are asked to share their expericenes and those can be addressed in the class. Its important for Matthew that people come to learn but also to have their questions answered and to explore as he feels based on hs years of experice tht there is rarely only one way to do things and that self defece and fighting are fluid and can vary from person to person based on age, physical condition, mindset and lifestyle.
